BusKill is a open-source laptop kill cord launched as a DIY project last year.
It's a USB cable with a magnetic breakaway in-line. When the cable disconnects, the (FOSS) software can trigger your laptop to lock, shutdown, or self-destruct if your machine is physically separated from you.
I'll discuss the OpSec benefits of using BusKill for journalists, activists, and human rights defenders. And the different triggers that can be executed (lock, hard/soft shutdown, self-destruct).
I'll describe the history of the project and the journey from a DIY open-source hardware blog post to exhausting the supply of the USB-A magnetic breakaway cables on the market. The current state of the crowdfunding campaign, and the plans for the future.
Finally, I'll demonstrate the use of our prototype BusKill cable, and open the mic for questions.
